1 in 4 people have a mental illness and suicide is the 3rd cause of death in this country. This is unacceptable. Mental illness and suicide are both areas that can be treated and it is disheartening to me how many people give up before they have sought help. I get it though - the stigma and shame of admitting we need help and admitting something might be more than we can handle is difficult. What does it say about a person who needs a little help? I think it says you’re incredibly strong.
I’ve seen people get better and regain their senses of self and find a life worth living again. We have abilities even in the most discouraging situations. The clients I see are heroic - all of them are on their own path, each different but all courageous.
Generational poverty, addiction, and stigma in our society can all lead to despair and many people aren’t even aware how the old thoughts and situations influence who they are today. When someone realizes what oppression is, they can fight back in healthy ways against it.
I am so grateful I have the opportunity to help people overcome their pain. There is nothing better than to see healing right in front me.
